Emoji Scavenger Hunt Clues: 50+ Ideas by Room & Difficulty

The hardest part of building an emoji scavenger hunt isn't the printing or the hiding. It's staring at a wall of emojis and thinking, "Which one says bathtub?"

This page is your cheat sheet. Over 50 emoji clue ideas organized by location, difficulty, and theme โ€” ready to use in Emoji Hunt or any scavenger hunt you're building.

How Emoji Clues Work

Each emoji represents a hiding spot. Kids see it on screen after scanning a QR code, then figure out which location it points to. The trick is picking an emoji that's recognizable but not too obvious โ€” you want kids to think for a second, not get stuck for five minutes.

Rule of thumb

If a 5-year-old can guess it in 10 seconds, it's easy. If it takes 30 seconds, it's medium. If they need a hint, it's tricky. Aim for a mix.

Tips for Picking Great Emoji Clues

  1. Pick something specific. A bathtub emoji clearly means the bathtub. A generic water droplet could mean anywhere. The more concrete the object, the better the clue.
  2. Match the emoji to what kids see. If your couch is brown, the couch emoji works. If your "bookshelf" is actually a stack of books on the floor, the book emoji still works โ€” kids think in concepts, not furniture catalogs.
  3. Alternate easy and hard. Start with an obvious clue (bed, fridge), throw in a tricky one mid-hunt (window sill, mirror), then end with something satisfying. The rhythm keeps kids engaged.
  4. Avoid abstract emojis. Hearts, stars, and smiley faces look nice but don't point anywhere. Stick to object emojis that represent physical things.
  5. Test with one kid first. Show them the emoji and ask "Where would you go?" If they get it, it works. If they stare blankly, swap it out.

Themed Clue Sets

Pirate Theme

Every clue uses a pirate-adjacent emoji. Treasure chest for the toy box. Parrot for the window. Skull for the Halloween decorations shelf. Ship for the bathtub (it floats, right?).
